Nakamal At Home - Stone Kava

** First, a note on Kava preparation. I typically use about 1 cup to 1 1/2 cups of ground Kava root to every 2 cups of water. I follow Nakamal At Home's recommendation of one teaspoon of soy lecitin for each cup, but if I am preparing a higher-grade Kava (like Wow!) I sometimes add an extra half teaspoon and use warmer water. For some reason, it just seems like the intuitive thing to do when you really want to get krunked. And it works. Once I finish kneading (I usually knead for about 30 minutes, repeating the process over and over again) I submerge the used root in an additional two cups of water overnight. The following afternoon I will then knead that Kava and try to squeeze out an additional two cups of weaker Kava. Let me leave no doubts, the second batch isn't the gravy that you get in the first batch. It is, however, perfect for a mid-afternoon session. Two shells of weaker Kava can take a load off.

After a long, stressful weekend (seems like a contradiction, no?) I decided to brew up some Nakamal At Home Stone Kava and settle into the sofa and catch up on some reading. It was my first time drinking Stone Kava and the first thing I noticed was the beautiful color and texture of the Kava. Stone has a cocoa-tint to it and is thicker than other Kavas, it has a very pleasant consistency and feels very nice going down. This seems like the perfect Kava to serve chilled. The highly palatable scent and texture, combined with a good numbing buzz, made for a very pleasant initial reaction. But the flavor was something else entirely - it raised the bar interminably for me. Until further notice, I will be rocking a quart or two of Stone in my refrigerator for guests who want to jump right in. This Kava has an amazing flavor - a bit more than mild, but a lot less than strong. It comes on earthy, which is par for the course, but slowly progresses through a nutmeg and almond taste until it leaves an extremely pleasant cashew-like aftertaste. I could easily make the mistake of drinking eight shells of this stuff just for the flavor and not be able to wake up the next morning.

The buzz is epic. This is what you are looking for, folks. It doesn't completely bury you the way Wow! does. Alternatively, it completely relaxes you and gives you a deeply satisfying, totally anxiety-relieving, nerve-calming body and mind buzz. Lately I've been running two or three miles a day, and this Kava completely relaxed my leg muscles after thirty or thirty-five minutes. It is downright medicinal. After drinking two shells, I found some Solomon Islands music I collected while doing fieldwork last summer and drifted back to the turquoise south Pacific seas. In terms of effect, this Kava is the real deal.

Taste 10/10
Effect 9.5/10

  1. i agree with everything you said about the stone kava. to me it feels like the sativa of the kava world because the buzz is so cerebral and less body load than other kavas. i find this one far stronger than cheifs jungle and niugini which are supposed to be stronger. very very good kava.

  2. Love your reviews, very informative and handy. Changed my decision on which kava to buy (importing to the uk, so had to be wise in my purchase) because of your blog, so saved me some money too I reckon !

  3. Stone Kava seems to have the highest rating but would you agree it is still your favorite after trying all these others?

  5. I'm confused as to exactly how much a "shell" is. I mixed up some Stone according to the directions of 1 cup root to 2 cups water, how many shells would this be?
However much it was, I drank it all and was feeling pretty tasty. VERY relaxing, probably my favorite so far out of the three I've tried including Wow and the Kona Kava farms.
    variety.

  6. Has anyone answered this question?

    A regular-sized shell is 1/2 cup.

p.s. The regular formula applied to this strain (especially the way it is very finely milled) is waaaay strong. 1/2-3/4 cups Stone Kava per 3 cups water seems to work nicely; limiting intake to 4 (maximum) "shells"; more with this strain can be (somewhat) felt the next morning. (Tongan & even Solomon's doesn't seem to have this quality). Anyone else agree?

  7. So far this is my favorite Kava from Nakamal. I just had the WOW last night and while it's body load was more pronounced, it's cerebral buzz was no where near the Stone Kava. Has anyone found Kava that is more cerebral than Stone Kava?

  8. could you explain the cup , in mesure's ie 250ml half pint or more?

  9. First thanks for your reviews. I was new to Kava and have tried three now. One blind and two based on your reviews. On the Stone here. I agree with what you said. A very "head strong" Kava. This may be one of my favs. This makes a Kava believer out of me.

  10. Stone is so awesome, pretty much a alcohol replacement. Im doing a experiment with Stone kava and Kava by Rex Vanautu3. Im doing 3/4 cup Stone with 1 tbs of Vanautu3, the nakamal way. Ill let you know how it goes!

  11. And Anthony I agree. No matter how much stone I intake, I always feel it in the morning. Not so much a cheif jungle feel (where i pretty much want to kill myself before i have coffee), more of a uplifting happy-go-lucky morning feeling, with a litttllle bit of groggy-ness. Still a great variety, but not be used if you have to get up quite early.

  12. I have done this kava a few times now, and i will say be careful! one of the 3 times i woke up completely hungover! a kava hangover is nothing like an alcohol one, but still be careful! I found it odd that i mixed it essentially the same way every time, but only felt it once... weird. I agree, 2 cups-1 cup of kava=too strong..I usually make a quart of water per cup, and nurse it for a few hours :) very nice!

  13. I just received some of this stuff and decided to whip up a batch using 3/4 cup of kava, 2 cups water, and a teaspoon of lecithin. I followed the Nakamalathome method to the T (soak, knead, blender, knead, strain) and came out with what looked like pretty nice, potent Kava. This was only my second time ingesting Kava, btw ( last night I tried the Shaman instant packet with very little result) so anyways i drank the stone Kava over about an hour within 4 shells and didnt feel too much. The only effects i felt were physical, slightly relaxed body, sweaty hands, numb mouth and throat. 30 minutes after finishing the last shell I decided to eat and have a slice of pizza. Almost as soon as I was done with it, I immediately almost felt drunk. Very uncoordinated and definitely intoxicated and now I am pretty tired 3 hours after my first shell. Anyone with a similar experience or any explanations? Thanks- Matt

  14. I took this earlier today after i ran, and man was it great. It tastes much better than most of the other kavas i have had. Like you said, it had an earthy and nutmeg taste, but it also had a nice peppery finish which was really great. It also gave a nice numb to the tounge and lips. I also got a nice buzz. It really relaxed my body and cleared my mind. Thanks for the posts. They are great guides for people who want to experience kava. Keep on posting!

  15. Matt - I think kava attaches itself to fat, which is why they say use soy lecithin. Also 4 shells in a hour is pretty rush rush, Id space them out to almost 2 hours so you dont get slammed, unless thats what you want...cant blame ya :P

  16. Kavasseur- Thank you for your comments on the medicinal qualities of the individual kava's. It really helps in the choosing! I know the companies selling Kava cannot make medical claims so your research is very helpful. Please continue!

  17. First off, awesome site! I've made some decisions based on your reviews, and it's all turned out well! Haha this stone kava is really great stuff! Since it binds with fat, is using oil a good option? I made a gallon of kava and used about 1/4 cup of vegetable oil. Seems like it worked, actually makes it go down even smoother, just a bit greasy when kneading lol.

  18. I tried Stone for the first time tonight. Ive tried wow, chiefs jungle, Tongan, Kona Kava.....but I gotta say I really like this one. I made 1 cup root to 4 cups water. I only drank about 14 ounces or so. OMG....what a buzz....Im krunk to the max. Im quite impressed. I really liked the Tongan too...this feels similiar but its def nice. Super chill right now. Had a beautiful girl over earlier. I couldnt take the smile off my face :) She thought I was drunk but she knows I dont drink alcohol. And yes, the taste is a bit milder which I appreciate because I really struggle with the flavor.

  19. Hey, Im about to place an order for half a kilo of Stone Kava and a quarter kilo of Chiefs Jungle.. I noticed that you usually say you mix a cup of kava in with the water and thats what you drink for your serving. How many cups of kava are in 250g? 500g? Thanks!

  20. This Stone Kava is some powerful stuff.

Big Kava fan- for relaxation, mainly- have tried Fiji and Hawaii ground root before with nice, mellow results, along with plenty of Kava pills/tinctures/etc. Tonight, I mixed 1 cup of Stone with 1 cup of water and 1 cup of milk, put it in the blender for 10 seconds, let sit for 1 hour, then strained and drank it down. Holy. Crap. I am obliterated. In my younger days, I experimented with all sorts of substances- this Kava is every bit as powerful as _most_ of those were. I feel wonderful...though I think it's going to be bed time soon. LOL

  21. Good lord, THIS is kava?! I drank practically an entire bag of Kona Instant (cocoa flavor, awful tasting stuff) without effect. With Stone, I mixed a quarter cup in 2 cups of water for 30 minutes, and kneaded per the instructions on this site (I really dig the ritual of preparing it). Drank it all fairly quickly since I figured it was way weaker than the above ratio. Nope. I'm sinking into my desk chair, workout pain completely gone, and like the above poster, good and wrecked (although I'd prefer a bit less for most nights). The only weird thing I notice is a floaty feeling in my head and a slight ringing in the ears...I don't yet know if this is the norm or not. The taste is VERY tolerable, even enjoyable, and the texture is velvety smooth. Since I've given up alcohol and cannabis, this seems like a wonderful replacement. A gift to be appreciated and respected. Consider me on board the kava train...I might even start recommending it to my patients. Thanks for working so hard on this site, and BULA!

  22. This stuff's fantastic.

I've tried kava in the past, and the mediocre results I got with extracts ended up making me avoid the stuff for years.

I finally tried this brand after finding this blog, and I'm blown away. I was expecting this to be more potent than what I'd tried, but I still thought it would be on the subtle side - I was expecting a slightly more pronounced version of valerian root or something like that.

I got a clue that maybe I was dealing with a different breed of kava during the preparation phase - I licked the tiniest bit of residue from my bowl and it made my entire mouth go numb. Then within minutes of drinking the rest of it, I got stronger euphoria than alcohol and my entire body felt nice and loose.

    I think I'm in love ;D

  23. So glad to read these comments! I haven't had ANY luck with extracts or any Kava I bought so far (never fresh ground root)... so I just bought quarter kilo of Stone! Can't wait!!

  24. Holy moly, I just drank about 3 shells of this and I'm knackered. Well done, N@H, well done.

To Anon above: Be careful with this stuff. I find the feeling you get from prepared kava (especially this) waaaay different from what you get, if anything, from extracts and the like. Don't do what I did, and prepare this as you were preparing dinner :O

  25. I don't get the whole "mellow anxiety relief" krunk that people are talking about. Stone comes on strong in a very cerebral way and then I'm wired for hours. I want to talk to people, write, read an awesome book, watch an epic movie, and listen to music. I had Stone the night before a morning shift at my work-- huge mistake. Kava hangover and couldn't get to sleep until two in the morning. It's a great Kava, but you really need time to sleep it off.

  26. I love this kava! The review is spot on though I wouldn't necessarily say it's tasty to drink haha

Anyway, thanks for this wonderful site and keep up the awesome reviews!

  27. Well. I just had two shells of Stone for the first time. I AM IN LOVE!! This is my new favorite kava. I tried the Wow! After coming across this blog last year. Its strong but made me feel like I was on muscle relaxers against my will. Lol. Then I tried Chiefs Jungle. Very strong with what I would call a bit more "head energy" to it. But this Stone is all I will buy from now on. I believe based off of reviews I would enjoy Solomons kava but I see you can't buy it any longer. I would also like to add I took Thai Kratom about an hour before the Stone kava. They mix well. But I encourage anyone to try kratom by itself first.

  28. Stone is great kava, Nakamal's products are all awesome. My only complaint with them is that they're quite expensive. If you're looking for quality, NMH is the way to go.

    @Anonymous
Kratom synergizes well with kava. I offer an island grown maeng da that has both sedating and energizing qualities, and it complements kava perfectly.

    1. Oh how cool!! I was just at your site. Never seen so many Kratom verities before. I will be sure to try you island maeung da. By any chance do you have small one dose serving samples that you sell or give away? If I can I always try to sample a new kratom before buying. But your price is good so I should just try some. Thank u

  29. Nutmeg, for Kratom, what would you recommend for the more euphoric strains? I've been a pretty loyal customer of Speciosa Pro and I'm looking to see what else is out there for curiosity sake.
    Thanks

    1. You just have to get used to the taste. It's definitely acquired. I used a cup of the root, 1 cup of milk, and 2 cups of water. I followed the normal preparation instructions, and it was pretty relaxing. The most relaxing one I have found so far is Wow Kava. The first time I had it, I could only drink half of it before my head started buzzing. The second time I could drink the whole thing. When I drank the whole thing, I found that I was walking weird, my body was a little numb, I was EXTREMELY relaxed, and I ran into a wall. Lol.

  31. Wow..just...how.

I have tried kava numerous times. I've tried high grade extract paste, capsules, tinctures, candies, and root powder from a different source. None of them produced very much in the way of results. Maybe a little bit of a sense of well being but that's it. When I got this stone, I tried 3 tablespoons with two cups of warm water and still little results. At this point I wad about to just give up on the stuff. As a last ditch effort I changed the recipe to 3 tablespoobs, with one cup water and one cup whole milk. 10 minutes after consuming I am really buzzed in a great way. It certainly feels like ame alcohol buzz with a better body buzz and a clear mind. I can not smoke other herbs as I get a panic attack every time. Now I don't feel like I'm missing anthing. I think I just found my new favorite herb for relaxation!

  32. I am Michelle Huxford from Casper, Wyoming. I was in a very chronic financial issue and terminal health situation some few weeks back. After all my search for assistance from friends and neighbors proved abortive, I feel there was no one who truly cares. I became so emaciated due to lack of good food and my 2 kids age 5 and 8 were not also good looking due to lack of proper care as a result of finance. One faithful morning I saw an old time friend of my late husband and I told him all I have been going through and he said the only way he could help was to direct me to a good loan agency that also helped him, He explained to me on how he was financially down and how he got boosted by this loan agency UPSTART LOAN INC ( upstartloan@yahoo.com ) who gave him loan at an affordable rate. He further assured me that they were the only legit loan firm he found in the quest of seeking for loan after been scammed by various fake loan lenders online. He gave me their email: upstartloan@yahoo.com or text/call (574) 301-1639, That was how i applied and was also granted a loan and my life changed for the good.
